On February 5, 2023, deputies with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department killed Tony Garza while he was experiencing a mental health crisis. Mr. Garza’s history of mental illness was well-known to the Sheriff’s Department. An independent autopsy reveals that the deputies repeatedly shot Mr. Garza in the back and again after he had collapsed to the ground. Local and national media outlets interviewed HSRD attorneys Brian Olney and Rebecca Brown regarding this senseless and tragic killing.
